Farz pronounced as Fardh is an Arabic word. It means duty or obligation. It denotes a religious duty commanded by Allah. The word is also used in Persian, Pashto, Turkish, and Urdu (spelled farz) in the same meaning.

Besides the Obligatory and Essential Prayers, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to make arrangements for the Voluntary (Nawafil) Prayers too. It is mentioned in the Hadith that Voluntary Worship is a means of attaining proximity to Allah.
